BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose Health Benefits:
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose (3-FL) , one of the smallest members of the human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) family, has bioactive properties that make this tiny substance potent and unique, as found in studies. It occurs naturally in breast milk during the first stage of lactation and increases throughout this period. Despite its small quantity, 3-FL is the second most abundant HMOs in breast milk after 2'-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) and is a fucosylated (neutral) HMOs.
■ Structural Characteristics
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose consists of three monosaccharides: fucose (Fuc), glucose (Glc), and galactose (Gal). Its backbone is lactose, which consists of glucose and galactose linked by a β-1,4 glycosidic bond. Fucose is attached to the galactose residue of lactose via an α-1,3 glycosidic bond, forming the structure “Fucose-α-1,3-Galactose-β-1,4-Glucose.” Technically, 3-FL is a structural isomer of 2'-FL because it contains the same monosaccharides, but they are attached slightly differently. Compared to other sugars, 3-FL is more stable in acidic environments (e.g., the stomachs of infants and young children) and during heating, allowing it to maintain its structural integrity during food processing and digestion and fulfill its physiological role.

BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose Applications:
The structure of BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose is similar to that of some glycoproteins found on intestinal mucosal cells. These glycoproteins can competitively bind to adhesion proteins on pathogens' surfaces, preventing the pathogens from adhering to intestinal or respiratory mucosa. This reduces the occurrence of infections. BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose stimulates the intestinal mucosa's immune system, promoting the maturation of immune cells and cytokine secretion. This enhances the body's innate and adaptive immune responses, reducing allergic and inflammatory reactions.
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose cannot be directly broken down by human digestive enzymes, but it can serve as an "exclusive nutrient source" for intestinal probiotics. This promotes their proliferation and inhibits the colonization and growth of harmful bacteria, thus maintaining the balance of intestinal flora. BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose stimulates the proliferation of intestinal mucosal cells, enhances intestinal epithelial tight junctions, and reduces intestinal permeability. This lowers the risk of harmful substances entering the bloodstream, thus preventing intestinal inflammation and infection.
▶ Growth and development
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose can promote the absorption of minerals and vitamins indirectly by regulating intestinal flora and barrier function. This helps with the development of infants' and children's bones and nervous systems. 3-FL supplementation can maintain intestinal flora balance and inhibit the inflammatory response.
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose is available in the following specification and contents:
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose can be added to infant formulas to simulate breast milk ingredients, helping maintain intestinal flora balance, enhance immunity, and promote nutrient absorption in infants and young children. Due to its stability, 3-FL retains its properties during the processing and storage of beverages. According to specific nutritional requirements, 3-FL can be added to food formulas for special medical purposes to meet the nutritional needs of certain groups of people and help them maintain health and regulate organism function. Additionally, 3-FL can be added to food supplements as a nutritional ingredient for the general population (excluding infants and young children) to regulate intestinal microflora and enhance immunity.
■ Nutritional value
BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose cannot be directly broken down by human digestive enzymes, but beneficial bacteria in the intestinal tract can selectively use it as a prebiotic to promote their growth while inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria, such as E. coli. This maintains the balance of intestinal flora. Additionally, 3-FL can reinforce the intestinal barrier by strengthening the connection between intestinal epithelial cells.
■ Production technology description
The production of 3-Fucosyllactose involves microbial fermentation, enzymatic synthesis, and chemical synthesis. Among these methods, microbial fermentation has become the most common due to its high efficiency and low cost. This process is based on specific strain construction and metabolic engineering strategies to obtain high-yielding strains. It uses lactose as a carbon source and adds nitrogen and minerals. It also improves substrate utilization through supplemental batch fermentation. The process involves ceramic membrane filtration to remove bacteria, ion exchange resin desalting, activated carbon decolorization, and isolation and purification of BABYILY®3-Fucosyllactose from the fermentation broth. Finally, the powdered product is obtained through concentration, crystallization, and spray drying.
Enzymatic synthesis is an enzyme-catalyzed reaction in which α-1,3-fucosyltransferase catalyzes the formation of 3-FL from lactose and GDP-L-fucose. This method is still in the laboratory stage, and industrial application requires breakthroughs in enzyme engineering and continuous reaction technology.
The chemical synthesis method uses lactose and L-fagarose as raw materials. 3-FL is produced by the glycosylation reaction between the fluorinated glycosyl donor and lactose, which is catalyzed by a Lewis acid. This process is complicated, difficult to purify, and expensive; therefore, it is only used for laboratory synthesis.
