ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine Health Benefits:

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine is a naturally occurring phospholipid compound primarily found in cell membranes, particularly in brain and nerve cells. It consists of a glycerol backbone, two fatty acid chains, and a serine headgroup. Phosphatidylserine regulates cell membrane fluidity, promotes signal transduction, and supports brain function. It is also used in dietary supplements.

Improve cognitive function and protect the nervous system

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine Applications:

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine is an essential component of cell membranes in the hippocampus, a critical brain region responsible for memory formation.

It promotes signal transmission between nerve cells, improves synaptic plasticity, and enhances short-term and long-term memory. Notably, it alleviates memory decline in the elderly. Studies have shown that taking PS supplements can improve memory test scores in people with cognitive impairment and help students and others improve their learning efficiency. As we age, PS levels in the brain gradually decrease, which may be associated with the onset of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and dementia. PS supplementation can protect neural cell structure, reduce oxidative stress damage to brain cells, and slow cognitive decline. PS is currently used as an adjunctive intervention for related diseases.

■ Source

In 1942, American chemist Jordi Folch isolated and characterized phosphatidylserine from a bovine brain. He hypothesized that the serine hydroxyl group was bound to the phosphatidyl group. This demonstrated that serine is of the L-type. In 1952, American scientists Baer and Maurukas elucidated its basic chemical structure and confirmed it through chemical synthesis. In 1990, Italian researcher M. Maggioni discovered that administering phosphatidylserine orally, isolated from bovine brain, could improve depressive symptoms in the elderly, as well as various behavioral and cognitive abilities. Subsequent studies have continued to reveal its effects on cognitive function and other areas.

Natural food sources of phosphatidylserine include beef and pork brains, egg yolks, fish, and soybeans. Soybeans are a common source of phosphatidylserine, which is extracted from soybean lecithin and then processed and refined. Soybean-derived phosphatidylserine is widely used in food and dietary supplements. Since phosphatidylserine can also be extracted from egg yolks, it is a suitable option for dietary supplements and medications for individuals with soy allergies. Additionally, phosphatidylserine can be extracted from bovine brain tissue. However, its use may be restricted in some regions due to potential risks of transmitting diseases and ethical considerations.

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine is available in the following specification and contents:

  ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine liqiuid (PS 20%-30%)

  ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine powder (PS 20%-90%)

The health and dietary supplement sectors are the primary application areas for ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine, with various products developed to address the needs of different populations. PS is used to improve memory decline and attention deficits in the elderly and to slow cognitive decline. PS is commonly found in “brain health” supplements, such as formulations that combine PS with fish oil and ginkgo biloba extract to enhance neuroprotective effects. Individuals who engage in high-intensity mental activity for work or study purposes may benefit from PS's ability to improve short-term memory, focus, and learning efficiency while reducing brain fatigue. Product forms typically include capsules, tablets, and oral liquids. As an "anti-stress" supplement, PS alleviates anxiety and tension and improves sleep quality impaired by stress. It is particularly suitable for populations in high-pressure workplaces. ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine is added to sports nutrition supplements to help athletes reduce cortisol levels after intense exercise, alleviate muscle fatigue and damage, and speed up recovery. It may also enhance endurance and coordination. PS is commonly found in supplements for endurance sports and strength training.

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine can be used as an adjunctive component in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease, senile dementia, and other diseases to protect nerve cells, improve synaptic function, and delay disease progression. PS can relieve symptoms of emotional disorders, such as depression and anxiety, and it has a regulatory effect on stress-related emotional problems. PS is often used in combination with other drugs or treatment methods.

Feed-grade Phosphatidylserine can improve the growth performance of farmed animals by increasing the survival rate of young animals, promoting growth and development, and enhancing stress resistance. It may also improve their behavioral state and immunity by regulating their nervous system function.

■ Nutritional components

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine is an important component of cell membranes and belongs to the phosphoglyceride class. It consists of a glycerol backbone, fatty acid chains, phosphate groups, and a serine head. Its molecular structure is divided into a hydrophilic head (serine) and a hydrophobic tail (fatty acid chains). This structure enables it to form the double-layered structure of cell membranes, maintaining membrane stability and permeability.

ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine can regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. When a person is under stress, the HPA axis can become overactive, which leads to elevated cortisol levels and causes anxiety, mood swings, and other issues. PS can inhibit the HPA axis's overreaction, reducing cortisol levels and alleviating stress-related emotional tension, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. Early studies have found that oral phosphatidylserine (PS) can help improve depressive symptoms in the elderly, possibly due to its regulation of neurotransmitter balance (such as serotonin and dopamine), thereby stabilizing emotional states.

After high-intensity exercise, the body experiences metabolic stress, which leads to elevated cortisol levels. These elevated cortisol levels may trigger muscle breakdown and exacerbate fatigue. ROMAPLP®Phosphatidylserine can reduce post-exercise cortisol spikes, decrease the release of muscle damage markers (such as creatine kinase), speed up recovery, and reduce post-exercise fatigue and soreness. Additionally, some studies suggest that PS improves neuromuscular signal transmission, enhancing coordination and endurance during exercise, particularly in activities requiring explosive power and endurance, such as running and cycling.
