HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus Health Benefits:
HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus belongs to the Lactobacillus genus and is one of the most extensively researched and clinically established probiotics in this genus. First isolated from the faeces of breastfed infants by Moro in 1900, it earned the name 'acidophilus' due to its ability to proliferate rapidly in acidic environments. It is primarily used in fermented dairy products, health foods, and functional beverages, and its core functions are centred on maintaining gut health, regulating immunity, and alleviating lactose intolerance.
■ Source
HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus was originally isolated from the faeces of breastfed infants and is a natural component of the human gut microbiota. It is particularly prevalent in the intestines of infants, young children and adolescents, accounting for approximately 15-25% of total lactobacilli. Its abundance declines slightly with age. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most significant beneficial bacteria in the adult gut. Its natural habitats are extensive and primarily include the human gut (colon and rectum), the vaginal and oral mucosae, and naturally fermented foods, dairy products and cereals, with dairy being its primary dietary source. Industrial strains are predominantly isolated from healthy human faecal matter, breast milk or traditional fermented foods. Following strain identification and validation of probiotic function (acid and bile salt tolerance, intestinal adhesion capacity and antibacterial activity), as well as safety assessment (toxicological testing, antibiotic resistance screening and toxin production testing), the strains undergo domestication.

HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus Applications:
As a core probiotic strain within the Lactobacillus genus, HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus is widely used in food, health supplements and special dietary products thanks to its characteristics, which include facultative anaerobiosis, tolerance of acid and bile salts, high-activity β-galactosidase and strong intestinal adhesion capacity. Its primary applications focus on promoting gut health, alleviating lactose intolerance and modulating the immune system, thereby catering to the needs of all population groups.
The core application of HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus is in conventional foods (functional fortification), with dairy products being the most well-established example. Fermented dairy products utilise freeze-dried bacterial powder containing Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus for co-fermentation, with the acidophilus strain making up 30–50% of the total bacterial culture. Alternatively, it can undergo sole fermentation to create distinctive 'high-acidophilus' products. In the case of milk powder products, the bacteria are added after the product has been sterilised and cooled to prevent high temperatures from destroying their activity. Synergistic effects can be achieved by combining it with prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides and galactooligosaccharides. In dairy beverages, freeze-dried bacterial powder is added after sterilisation and cooling to 10-15°C, and is then combined with natural fruit and vegetable juices and prebiotics to create 'low-sugar, gut-friendly' products. HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus is primarily used in health foods and dietary supplements. Certain powdered and granular formulations incorporate bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus rhamnosus, providing three benefits: regulating the intestines, enhancing the immune system and providing relief from lactose intolerance.
Capsule contents comprise bacterial powder and fillers, while tablets incorporate microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, and other excipients used in tablet production to protect the bacterial strains against gastric acid. Products targeting specific demographics, such as paediatric probiotic supplements, feature low-dose formulations with natural fruit flavours that are free from sucrose and artificial flavourings. These are blended with fructooligosaccharides and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) to align with the characteristics of children's gut microbiota. Some formulations contain calcium, iron and zinc to enhance nutrient absorption synergistically. Probiotic supplements for the elderly contain high-potency formulations that combine multiple probiotic strains with B vitamins, calcium, vitamin D, and other nutrients. These improve digestion, absorption and bone health, and alleviate constipation in older adults. Lactose intolerance-specific supplement formula: High-potency Lactobacillus acidophilus+β-galactosidase+galacto-oligosaccharides. This supplement is specifically designed for lactose-intolerant individuals. Take prior to consuming milk to rapidly alleviate bloating and diarrhoea.
Furthermore, Lactobacillus acidophilus possesses acid and bile salt tolerance properties that align with the digestive tract environment of pets (cats and dogs). It can regulate the intestinal microbiota of pets, alleviating issues such as diarrhoea, constipation, and indigestion. It is particularly suitable for young pets, elderly pets, pets recovering from surgery, and those with lactose intolerance.
As an intrinsic beneficial bacterium of the gut, HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus regulates microbial balance through three mechanisms. Firstly, it competes with other bacteria for intestinal mucosal colonisation sites and nutrients, thereby inhibiting the growth of pathogenic and putrefactive bacteria. Secondly, it efficiently produces L-lactic acid through homofermentative fermentation, rapidly lowering intestinal pH to 5.0-5.5 and creating an acidic environment that is unfavourable for harmful bacteria. Thirdly, it secretes antimicrobial peptides (such as lactoferrin and lactobacillin) and hydrogen peroxide, which directly disrupt the integrity of pathogenic bacteria's cell membranes. This inhibits their proliferation and reduces the production of putrefactive products, such as ammonia, indole and hydrogen sulphide, within the gut.
HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus interacts with the mucosal immune system of the gut (Peyer's patches and the lymphoid tissue of the lamina propria) to activate immune cells, such as macrophages, dendritic cells and T/B lymphocytes. This process promotes the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-β) and inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α and IFN-γ). This establishes an 'anti-inflammatory immune microenvironment'. This process involves the secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) and the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
▶ Relieving lactose intolerance
One of the key benefits of HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus is its highly active β-galactosidase enzyme (activity level ≥10 U/mL), which breaks down lactose in dairy products directly within the gut. This generates glucose and galactose for absorption by the human body, thereby preventing the fermentation of lactose in the intestines that produces gases such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Consequently, it alleviates the symptoms of lactose intolerance, including bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and increased flatulence.

■ Biological characteristics
HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus exhibits rapid growth in standard lactobacillus culture media. These require supplementation with carbon sources, such as glucose and lactose, as well as nitrogen sources, including peptone and yeast extract. Certain strains require additional growth factors, such as vitamins and amino acids. Its facultative anaerobic nature means that strictly anaerobic conditions are not necessary for industrial production. Lactobacillus acidophilus has an excellent tolerance of the environment of the digestive tract, enabling it to traverse the gastrointestinal barrier and colonise the intestinal mucosa. Its homofermentative lactic acid production is highly efficient, rapidly lowering intestinal pH and inhibiting the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. Some strains produce antimicrobial peptides, such as lactoferrins A and B, and hydrogen peroxide, which disrupt the cell membrane structure of pathogenic bacteria directly, thereby enhancing intestinal microecological balance.
▶ Regulating intestinal motility
Lactic acid, which is produced by the metabolism of HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus, lowers the pH of the intestines. This enhances the solubility of minerals such as calcium, iron and zinc (for example, calcium solubility increases by over 30%). This improves their absorption in the gut, thereby reducing the risk of iron deficiency anaemia and osteoporosis. Lactobacillus acidophilus is particularly suitable for adolescents, promoting bone development, and for pregnant women, supplementing iron and calcium. It synthesises B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12 and folate) and vitamin K within the gut, supplementing dietary nutrient deficiencies. This makes it ideal for vegetarians and those with imbalanced diets.
■ Production process
The production process for HOLIVE®Lactobacillus acidophilus involves strain activation, stepwise scaling-up of the seed culture, the core process of high-density fermentation, cell harvesting and washing for purification and enrichment, freeze-drying for protection and vacuum freeze-drying for key viability preservation technology, and post-processing and packaging for final product formulation. This process makes full use of the facultative anaerobic, acid-tolerant and lactic acid-producing properties of Lactobacillus acidophilus. It increases the yield of live bacteria through high-density fermentation, maintains their viability via a scientifically designed freeze-drying protection system and guarantees safety and regulatory compliance by implementing rigorous quality control measures throughout the entire production chain. The final product meets the diverse requirements of various applications, including food, health supplements and special dietary products.
