Mineraux®Manganese citrate Health Benefits:

Manganese is widely distributed throughout the biosphere; however, its concentration in the human body is minimal, making it an essential trace element. In the body, manganese acts partly as a component of metalloproteins and partly as an enzyme activator. Examples of manganese-containing enzymes include arginase, pyruvate carboxylase and manganese superoxide dismutase. Arginase is an enzyme found in the cytoplasm that catalyses urea synthesis. Pyruvate carboxylase catalyses the first step in the synthesis of carbohydrates from pyruvate. Manganese activates numerous enzymes, including oxidoreductases, hydrolases, ligases, kinases, decarboxylases, and transferases. Manganese deficiency can lead to various biochemical and structural defects, including growth disorders, skeletal deformities and reproductive dysfunction. Excellent sources of manganese include grains, followed by vegetables and fruits. Dairy products, meat, fish and poultry contain very little manganese. Manganese can also be obtained through dietary supplements.

Mineraux®Manganese citrate is an organic manganese compound formed by chelation between citric acid and manganese ions. It features high bioavailability, low irritation, and broad application scenarios. As an organic manganese fortifier, manganese citrate is suitable for use in the food sector for formulating milk powders, health foods, foods for special dietary uses (sports nutrition products, foods for special medical purposes), and nutritional supplements.

Bone health

Mineraux®Manganese citrate Applications:

Mineraux®Manganese citrate activates enzymes that synthesise collagen, promotes the cross-linking of the bone matrix and enhances the stability of the skeletal structure. It works together with calcium and vitamin D to improve the efficiency with which calcium is deposited in bones, thereby maintaining the balance between bone formation and resorption.

■ Core features

Mineraux®Manganese citrate is stable at room temperature and in acidic environments, but it may decompose at high temperatures or in strongly alkaline conditions. Its chelated structure prevents it from binding with phytate and fibre in food, significantly enhancing manganese bioavailability. Manganese citrate's organic form achieves an absorption rate of 25%-35%, which is 2-3 times higher than that of inorganic manganese sulphate (10%-15%). It also significantly reduces gastrointestinal irritation, making it particularly suitable for vulnerable groups such as infants, young children and pregnant women.

Mineraux®Manganese citrate is available in the following specification and contents:

  Mineraux®Manganese citrate anhydrous 96.5-104.8%

Mineraux®Manganese citrate, as a highly bioavailable organic manganese source, demonstrates broad application potential in the food industry, nutritional supplements, and specialized fields due to its stability and low irritancy.

In the food industry, manganese citrate is used to fortify food and enhance its functionality. When added to dairy products and plant-based alternatives, it works together with calcium and vitamin D to improve bone density. Its mild acidity (pH 6.5–7.5) ensures it is well-tolerated by dairy products and prevents protein precipitation. In plant-based beverages, manganese citrate compensates for the naturally low manganese content of plant foods. Its chelated structure prevents binding with phytate, which can hinder absorption. In baked goods and cereals, manganese citrate activates pyruvate carboxylase in the dough, thereby improving its extensibility, antioxidant properties and shelf life. It is often combined with electrolytes (such as sodium and potassium) in sports drinks to accelerate lactic acid metabolism and reduce muscle soreness.

It is used in the health supplement sector for precision nutrition and gentle supplementation. The tablets/capsules are suitable for middle-aged and elderly individuals, as well as athletes. The absorption rate of 25%–35% is significantly higher than that of manganese sulphate (10%–15%). Liquid supplements are often combined with vitamin C and zinc in oral solutions to aid post-surgical recovery and enhance the immune system. Complex nutrients and functional products regulate mineral balance to support uric acid excretion. Antioxidant complexes often combine selenium and vitamin E to create antioxidant tablets that boost Mn-SOD activity and delay cellular ageing.

■ Production technology characteristics

Using food-grade manganese sulfate or manganese carbonate and citric acid as primary raw materials, the manganese salt solution is mixed with citric acid at 55-60°C. By adjusting the pH value (5.0-6.0) to promote complexation, crude manganese citrate is produced. Through activated carbon adsorption, ultrafiltration separation, and vacuum drying, impurities such as heavy metals (lead ≤10 ppm, arsenic ≤3 ppm) and sulfates (≤0.02%) are removed, yielding a final product with ≥96.5% purity (dry basis). Additionally, by adding biological enzymes such as pectinase, raw material utilization is enhanced, achieving a juice yield exceeding 79%.

Mineraux®Manganese citrate acts as a cofactor for key enzymes, such as pyruvate carboxylase and those involved in fatty acid metabolism, and participates in the processes of glycolysis and lipolysis. It accelerates energy production while reducing the build-up of metabolic waste products such as lactic acid. For individuals who stay up late or lead sedentary lifestyles, taking supplements can alleviate fatigue caused by insufficient energy production and boost daily vitality.

 Energy metabolism

Mineraux®Manganese citrate is involved in the production of sphingomyelin, which forms the myelin sheaths that insulate nerve fibres. It prevents myelin hypoplasia, which can impair nerve conduction. It also regulates the metabolism of neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin, thereby balancing neural excitation and inhibition. In middle-aged and elderly individuals, supplementation slows memory decline and helps prevent mild cognitive impairment.

 Neurodevelopment and function

Chemistry name:Manganese(II) citrate

CAS No.: 10024-66-5

EINECS No.: 233-027-3

Chemical formula: C12H10Mn3O14

Molecular mass: 543.02 g/mol

The core health benefits of Mineraux®Manganese citrate lie in its moderately high absorption rate (25-35%) as an organic form of manganese, its low level of gastrointestinal irritation and its role in key physiological functions. It is suitable for adults of all ages, including the elderly and pregnant women, and supports multidimensional health, including bone health, energy metabolism and neuroprotection. It is more cost-effective than chelated manganese salts and causes significantly less irritation than inorganic manganese salts (such as manganese sulphate).

Physical and Chemical Properties:

Mineraux®Manganese citrate activates the phagocytic activity of macrophages, promotes the proliferation of lymphocytes and the production of antibodies, and strengthens the body's defences against pathogens. As a component of manganese superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD), it eliminates intracellular free radicals and minimises the damage caused to cell membranes by lipid peroxidation. In immunocompromised individuals (e.g. those prone to colds), supplementation reduces the incidence of respiratory infections and shortens the duration of illnesses. It also mitigates oxidative damage to the vascular endothelium, thereby helping to lower the risk of atherosclerosis.
