The production process of Plantago ovata seed husk powder involves extracting and processing the outer shells of Plantago ovata seeds into a powder. This process requires multiple steps to ensure the powder is pure, safe, and functional. First, mature, round-podded Plantago ovata seeds with husks are harvested. Then, impurities are removed using equipment such as vibrating screens and air separators. This ensures the purity of the raw material. The seeds are rinsed quickly with clean water to remove dust and residual contaminants from their surfaces, thereby reducing the risk of microbial contamination. Then, the seeds are dried using low-temperature drying (40-50°C) or natural air drying to reduce their moisture content to 8–10%. This makes them suitable for subsequent shell removal processing.
Round-seeded plantain seeds consist of an outer seed coat, which is rich in dietary fiber, and an inner seed kernel containing oils and proteins. These two parts must be separated using physical methods. Richtek uses a special dehulling machine that breaks the seed coat through friction and compression while keeping the seed kernel intact. The mixture is then sorted using airflow to separate the lighter seed coat from the heavier seed kernel, resulting in pure psyllium husk.
The separated seed shells must be washed again to remove any remaining fragments or impurities. To ensure food safety, microorganisms (such as bacteria and mold) and insect eggs should be killed using high-temperature steam (100-121°C) or irradiation disinfection if necessary. Then, the disinfected seed shells are dried at a low temperature (50-60°C) to reduce the moisture content to below 5%. This prevents clumping during grinding and extends the shelf life. Finally, an ultra-fine grinder is used to grind the dried seed shells into powder. The particle size of the powder is controlled through sieving. Food-grade psyllium husk powder typically has a particle size of 80-100 mesh to ensure a smooth texture. Health supplements or industrial raw materials may use finer particle sizes (120-200 mesh) to enhance water solubility and dispersibility.
