herbgreey®Yohimbine extract Health Benefits:

herbgreey®Yohimbine extract is a natural ingredient derived from the bark of the African plant Corynanthe yohimbe. The main active ingredient in yohimbine extract is yohimbine, which belongs to the indole alkaloid compound family. Yohimbine is a white, crystalline powder that tastes bitter. It dissolves easily in organic solvents such as chloroform and methanol, and is slightly soluble in water.

 Men's health

Theoretically, because yohimbine blocks α2-adrenergic receptors, it dilates the blood vessels in the genitals and increases blood flow. This led to its early use in studies to improve erectile dysfunction (ED). While some small-scale clinical trials have demonstrated its potential as an adjunctive therapy for certain types of ED, the effects can vary significantly from person to person. Furthermore, safer and more effective alternative treatments, such as PDE5 inhibitors, are now available.

■ Source

herbgreey®Yohimbe extract is derived from the yohimbe tree (Corynanthe yohimbe K. Schum.), an evergreen tree belonging to the genus Corynanthe in the Rubiaceae family. The extract is obtained from the bark, which contains indole alkaloids including yohimbine. Yohimbe is native to tropical Africa, where it is found primarily in tropical rainforests and moist forests in West and Central Africa. The warm and humid climate in these regions, characterised by high average annual temperatures and abundant rainfall, provides ideal conditions for yohimbe trees to grow. As the bark is the main source of yohimbe extract, the trees have traditionally been harvested in the wild for medicinal purposes and for the extract trade. However, excessive logging has led to a decline in wild populations in some areas, prompting some regions to experiment with artificial cultivation to balance demand for the resource.

herbgreey®Yohimbine extract is available in the following specification and contents:

■ Active ingredients

The core active ingredient in herbgreey®Yohimbine extract is yohimbine, an indole alkaloid and the extract's most extensively studied and biologically active component. Its chemical name is 17α-hydroxyyohimbine-16α-carboxylic acid methyl ester. Yohimbine's pharmacological activity is primarily related to its blocking effect on α₂-adrenergic receptors. This mechanism has led to its potential for vasodilation and neurotransmitter regulation being investigated in laboratory studies. In addition to yohimbine, yohimbe bark extract may contain trace amounts of other indole alkaloids from the same family, including ajmalicine and reserpine. However, these components are typically present in lower concentrations and are far less biologically active than yohimbine.

herbgreey®Yohimbine extract can indirectly boost levels of neurotransmitters such as adrenaline and dopamine by inhibiting the activity of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase (MAO). While this may temporarily boost alertness and relieve fatigue, long-term use can lead to anxiety and blood pressure fluctuations.

 Nervous system health

herbgreey®Yohimbine extract has been shown to promote fat metabolism and improve athletic endurance. It stimulates the release of adrenaline, which activates beta-adrenergic receptors on fat cells and accelerates the breakdown of fat. This process converts stored fat into free fatty acids that are released into the bloodstream to provide the body with energy.

■ Extraction process characteristics

The production process for herbgreey®Yohimbine extract uses yohimbe bark as the raw material. The main objective is to extract and concentrate indole alkaloids, particularly yohimbine, while eliminating impurities such as cellulose, tannins and oils.

Richtek selects dried yohimbe bark (preferably from the trunk, as this has a higher alkaloid content), removing any attached sand, impurities and mould. The bark is then quickly rinsed with clean water and drained. The bark is then crushed into a coarse powder (typically 20-40 mesh) to increase its surface area and improve subsequent extraction efficiency. Extraction is the core step, and solvent extraction is the most common method. The appropriate solvent is selected based on the solubility characteristics of the alkaloid. Yohimbine is easily dissolved in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol and chloroform, as well as in dilute acid solutions such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid. In industry, aqueous ethanol solutions (e.g. 70-90% ethanol) or acidic ethanol are often used as extraction solvents, balancing solubility and safety.

The extract contains a significant amount of impurities and requires further purification to increase the yohimbine content. The extract is first filtered through filter cloth to remove residue, then concentrated by vacuum distillation at 40-50°C to recover some of the solvent, yielding a concentrated solution resembling an extract. If an acidic solvent was used for the initial extraction, a base such as ammonia can be added to adjust the pH to an alkaline level, which will liberate the alkaloids. The solution is then extracted with an organic solvent (such as chloroform) to remove water-soluble impurities.

The purified solution is concentrated under reduced pressure and an appropriate amount of solvent is added to induce crystallisation, resulting in the precipitation of crude yohimbine. Further purification is achieved through recrystallisation (e.g. using a methanol-water system), followed by vacuum drying to obtain the finished product.
